Holding the Silence (the awareness of the power of the Presence of the Divine within and without) from David V. Bush's book, "How to Hold the Silence" c. 1920. In a half reclining position--such as may be obtained in a Morris chair, or by tilting a rocker back and putting under the two rockers in front a support, or by lying on the back without a pillow, or seated in a chair, with feet squarely on the floor, hands resting gently in the lap, palms upward, head tilted backwards a little--take the word "Peace" as your silence thought. Fancy you are enveloped by the spirit of infinite love. You may be able to see a light completely enveloping your body as you hold your thought. This light may be of a golden color, may turn into violet rays, may be pink or light blue. Now, continuing to see your body enveloped by this ray of light, infinite love, hold your thought "I am Peace, Peace Peace." Then pause in complete relaxation for two or three minutes. If you find it easy be perfectly relaxed for a long time. Now bring your consciousness up to the forehead, still continuing to see the light: "I am Peace, Peace, Peace." Bring the consciousness into the brain: "I am Peace, Peace Peace." Now direct the ray of light, still enveloping the body, particularly into the eyes, the ears, the nasal cavities, cheek bones and mouth and through the head entirely (pause each time for one minute or longer, according to how one feels) and still hold your thought: "I am Peace, Peace, Peace." See this golden light in the abdomen and torso of the body, still holding your thought: "I am Peace, Peace, Peace." Follow the golden light down the legs into the tips of the toes, at the same time holding your thought: "I am Peace, Peace, Peace." Make a strong picture now of the golden light enveloping the body, again bringing the consciousness back to the forehead: "I am Peace, Peace, Peace." (Perhaps you will now take a longer time to pause, rest and relax.) Again: "I am Peace, Peace, Peace." Pause and relax as long as the spirit seems to dictate. Now come out of the silence still holding the thought : "I am Peace, Peace, Peace." Practicing the silence in this way one will find a peace of mind, repose of the soul, poise and power seldom found in any other way. It will put one at ease and at peace with himself and the world.
